We evaluated the effect of cocoa products on blood pressure in adults when consumed daily for at least two weeks. Thirty-five studies were found, covering 40 treatment comparisons.

Dark chocolate and cocoa products are rich in chemical compounds called flavanols. Flavanols have attracted interest because they may help lower blood pressure, a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (disorders of the heart and blood vessels). The blood pressure-lowering properties of flavanols are thought to be related to the widening of blood vessels, caused by nitric oxide.

The studies were short, most lasting two to 12 weeks, with only one lasting 18 weeks. The studies included 1804 mostly healthy adults. Participants were given 30 to 1218 mg of flavanols (mean 670 mg) in 1.4 to 105 grams of cocoa products per day in the active intervention group. Seven of the studies were funded by companies with a commercial interest in their results, and the reported effect was slightly larger in these studies, indicating possible bias. The evidence is current as of November 2016.

Wine, beer, spirits… any type of alcoholic beverage stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and the heart rate, which raises blood pressure. This is revealed by research published in the journal Plos Medicine.

If the first figure is already a problem, the second is no less so, because if we are not aware that our blood pressure is above the recommended values, it will be difficult to remedy it.

However, once the problem has been detected, it is a matter of tackling it, and to do so, we know that a low-salt diet and the regular practice of moderate exercise can help to restore healthy levels.

🙃 Foods that raise blood pressure quickly

People with high blood pressure (hypertension) should place great emphasis on watching their diet, as certain foods could have adverse effects on their body. Foods such as salt, alcohol or sugary drinks are the first foods that a doctor will prohibit or limit for a person with hypertension. However, there are other foods that generate more doubts.

Cocoa, and therefore chocolate, has caffeine. Especially dark chocolate, since the higher the percentage of cocoa, the more caffeine. And it has always been said that caffeine raises blood pressure.

In this regard, it should be noted that, as stated by the EFSA, a 50-gram dark chocolate bar usually contains about 20 milligrams of caffeine. On the other hand, a standard 100 ml coffee contains about 180 mg of caffeine.
