This is how Arcel’s adaptation is a combination of western, horror and action, which can be entertaining and even enjoyable for those who are not familiar with Stephen King’s work, however, it will probably not be liked by the writer’s fervent admirers due to their detachment from the original work. From the point of view of someone totally unfamiliar with the books that inspired it, it can be said that the film presents an acceptably handled story with some very well done action sequences. However, the lack of character development makes the plot feel empty and flat, with a rather hasty ending that resolves the expected final encounter between hero and villain in a very simple way.

However, to my neophyte eyes I found it an estimable adventure that has kept me attentive to the screen and that within its undeniable similarities in its roots to the works of other authors, I had fun and had a good time, with a great performance by Idris Elba who seems to me a great actor, and the boy Tom Taylor, but the one I didn’t like in his evil side was Matthew McConaughey, an actor who has won me over since his great characterization of Ron Woodroof in «Dallas Buyers Club» and the great first season of «True Detective».

«The world-building of ‘Tower’ lacks the weight (…) that the Tolkien books that inspired King have (…) Though it’s satisfying enough to please many casual viewers.»

«Even with top-notch stars, ‘Dark Tower’ collapses under the weight of its mediocrity (…) Nikolaj Arcel’s film only touches the surface of the ‘Dark Tower’ mythology (…) Score: ★ (out of 4)»

«It’s a competent and watchable paranoid, metaphysical video game (…) It includes some morbidly entertaining visual effects (…) It works as a movie because it doesn’t try to be a multiverse»

«A disastrous film (…) It’s surprising that ‘The Dark Tower’ has so little energy, or that it doesn’t convey any magical feeling, or that it doesn’t present a wider world beyond what Jake is capable of experiencing»

«Even when the film around him is absolute garbage and nonsense, Idris Elba is fun to watch (…) [‘Tower’] left me confused and frequently annoyed, but not necessarily bored.»

The Dark Tower premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on July 31, 2017, and was released in the United States on August 4, 2017 through Columbia Pictures. [8] The film grossed $113 million worldwide against a budget of $60 million and received generally negative reviews, with critics calling it «a dull disappointment with no steady audience: incomprehensible to newcomers, (and) wildly unfaithful and simplistic to King fans», although the performances of Elba, McConaughey and Taylor merited some praise.[9][10][11][11][12][13]

While Roland rearms in a gun store, Walter captures Jake. At his base, he ties him to a machine with the intention of having him destroy the Tower. Jake uses his psychic powers to warn Roland of his location and Roland fights his way through, fighting off Walter’s henchmen.

[14] King mentioned that he has never had a clear image of the character’s face, and explained, «I never thought about him, but [in the film] he becomes a character who is not just a mirage that Roland who is chasing, as things stand, he’s there.»
